We were told by the locals in Exuma, where we rescued Sophie, about the meaning behind the name “Potcake.” They told us the name came from the stories of the locals on the island who would feed the stray/mixed breed dogs the caked remains from their cooking pots.
There are efforts being made to help control the population of these strays by spaying/neutering but it is very hard to keep up. The feral dog population of the islands is growing, and many litters of puppies are being found, some all alone without their litter mates or Mother. They are being found all over the island from locals backyards, construction sites, even the airport! There are a few websites I have found that are trying very hard to find homes for these little ones and are even willing to pay the cost to fly them back with tourists visiting the island in order to get them to new homes in big cities. See some links below for these great websites:

hello Congratulations to you for rescuing a potcake I have travelled to the Island of Exuma for the past 2 years and discovered this amazing little breed of dogs and fell in love and felt so much compassioon for them because of the way these animals are treated My family has rescued 11 dogs from the Island and found homes for 10 of them and we kept 1 for ourselves. I just returned last week and have a little one now! Your potcake is so cute Jill hope this letter finds its way to you!
